The work of Assoc. Prof. Sevil Yazıcı (PhD) titled “Manufacturing Method for a Building System in regards to Structural and Environmental Factors” is granted by a Patent in October, 2021 (US11141881B2).

The invention is based on form generation process driven by environmental conditions, specifically the dune fields. A set of architectural geometry described computationally, can respond to different spatial conditions, such as shell structures, from fully enclosed to semi-open surfaces. In this approach, in situ materials are used with robotic fabrication; more specifically, 3D printing is used on Martian land. A material system, which creates a TiO2-based shielding layer, was developed against high radiation levels on the Martian surface. The interconnected structural modules were considered similar to the brick material, called T-brick. The method can be potentially implemented on Earth and extraterrestrial environments. It was developed in response to the In-Situ Materials Challenge by NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
